Planning to paint or redecorate part of your home?

Having a few handy tricks and tips up your sleeve can make that DIY painting job easier, more economical and more successful.  Here are our top recommendations for ensuring a paint job you can be proud of.

Invest In Quality

A good-quality brush or roller truly makes all the difference. Quality equipment not only lasts longer but also leaves fewer marks and is less likely to drop fibres or bristles. It’s definitely one investment you won’t regret.

Prevent Your Paint Roller From Drying Out

A roller with dry paint on is a nuisance and can leave flecks on your walls if you don't clean it out properly. To avoid this altogether, keep your paint roller in your fridge inside a can. It’s that simple!

Stop Paint Odours In Their Tracks

One of the downsides of painting is the smell, but you won’t believe how easy it is to kill those wet paint fumes! A suggestion is simply add a couple of teaspoons of vanilla extract to your paint can and stir it in. The vanilla will mask the odour with no effect on the paint.

Don’t Wash Your Brush

If you’re taking a break from painting for a few days, there's no need to wash your brush out. Simply coat it in paint and wrap it tightly in cling wrap to prevent it from drying out.

Freshen Up Your Old Brushes

You might think there’s no use for a dry brush, but they’re very easy to get clean. Simply soak them in hot vinegar for 30 minutes, then rinse and wash them as normal.

Tape Your Edges

Wanting to ensure a clean line between walls and trim, or trying to avoid paint-stained windows? Painter’s tape can really come in handy to keep your handy work looking neat. Unlike regular masking tape, it’s less adhesive, so it's much easier to pull off when you’re done.

Start With The Edges

If you’re painting a room and wondering where to start, do the edges first. This will mean you won’t have to climb ladders or get down on the floor at the end of your painting job, and can also protect walls and ceilings from accidental splatters or marks.

Clean Your Walls

Removing marks from your walls before you start painting will guarantee a beautiful finish. Fill in any holes with filler and sand them down, wipe off any dust and buff your walls to remove any stains.

Less Is More

Drowning your roller or brush in paint might seem more effective, but it’s more likely to lead to drips in the paint or a longer clean-up job, with paint flying off the brush or getting into hard-to-reach spots.
